Wakeful rest may improve memory, research suggests
A meta-analysis published in January 2026, which synthesized 142 effects from 51 different studies, suggests that periods of “wakeful rest” can have a positive impact on memory.
Wakeful rest refers to periods where an individual remains awake but receives minimal new input, such as sitting or lying quietly, often with eyes closed, without performing new tasks. This practice is distinct from meditation or taking a power nap. The research indicates that the brain may use these pauses to process recently learned information and experiences.
The study found a small to moderate positive effect on memory overall. These benefits were notably more significant in older adults compared to younger healthy adults, as well as in individuals suffering from memory impairments.
