Wakker Dier sues NS over rejected advertising campaign

The animal rights organization Wakker Dier has initiated legal proceedings against the Dutch railway operator NS via a preliminary injunction. The dispute centers on NS's refusal to allow a poster campaign at stations for the ‘Eet Geen Dierendag’ (Don't Eat Animals Day) initiative.

The proposed advertisements featured images of livestock and asked commuters if they would consider not eating 650,000 animals for a single day. NS Stations has declined to display the campaign, stating that they make ‘careful considerations’ to ensure all passengers feel ‘welcome and comfortable’ at their stations.

Wakker Dier contends that the refusal is an infringement on freedom of speech and argues that state-owned companies should not dictate which social discussions are permitted. The organization noted that the topic of meat consumption has become increasingly sensitive following recent farmer protests. The case is set to be heard by the court in Utrecht on Wednesday morning.
