Waldemar Żurek addresses judicial reforms and Constitutional Tribunal issues

During an event at Campus Polska, Polish Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek addressed the current state of the ruling coalition and judicial reforms. Żurek remarked that the democratic camp has “burned through” some of the momentum gained from their election victory, noting that many expected changes to occur more rapidly than they have. He admitted that certain personnel decisions within the courts and prosecution could have been implemented sooner.

Addressing the situation at the Constitutional Tribunal, Żurek commented on the challenges facing newly appointed members. He specifically defended Maciej Berk, stating that “great harm was done to Mr. Berk” by presenting him as a political associate rather than the legal expert he is. Żurek emphasized that Berk has never belonged to a political party and noted that true success for the Tribunal requires a breakthrough involving its eighth member to allow the Assembly of Judges to function properly.
