Waldensian-Methodist Synod opens in Torre Pellice

The Waldensian-Methodist Synod has commenced in Torre Pellice, Italy, bringing together 180 delegates representing approximately 25,000 members across 150 communities. The event follows a 1975 integration pact between the two churches, which has resulted in joint synods since 1979.

During the inaugural service, Pastor Eugenio Bernardini delivered a sermon based on the Gospel of Matthew, focusing on the themes of poverty and radical obedience to Jesus. Bernardini cautioned against “wrong visions” of God that are used to justify war, violence, and the pursuit of power, noting that religious justifications for conflict have resurfaced in the modern era.

The Synod includes the installation of the Synod Commission and the presidency of Pastor Daniele Bouchard. Key topics for the upcoming sessions include diaconal frontiers, youth, children, and the 50th anniversary of the Italian Evangelical Women's Federation. Additionally, a new moderator for the Tavola is expected to be elected following the conclusion of Alessandra Trotta's term.
