Waldshut district storm causes child death and injuries

A severe storm in the Waldshut district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, resulted in the death of a child and serious injuries to an adult. The Waldshut-Tiengen Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed the fatalities occurred on Friday, August 28, in the eastern part of the district near the Swiss border. Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact circumstances of the child's death and the nature of the injuries sustained by the adult.

The storm brought hurricane-force gusts, heavy rain, and large hail to the High Rhine region. Reports indicate hail stones reached diameters of up to six centimeters, and approximately 46,000 lightning strikes were recorded in a short period. The weather caused significant damage, including uprooted trees, flooded basements, and destroyed construction sites. In the neighboring Swiss canton of Schaffhausen, wind gusts were measured at speeds of up to 142 kilometers per hour.
