Wales and England see rise in Bluetongue cases

The Welsh Government is urging livestock keepers to monitor their herds for signs of Bluetongue (BTV-3) as cases rise across Wales and England. Following the implementation of the all-Wales Restricted Zone in November 2025, livestock can move freely between the two regions, making it critical for producers to verify the disease status of replacement animals before purchase.

Chief Veterinary Officer Richard Irvine noted that the region is currently in an active transmission period, with emerging cases in cattle and sheep throughout Wales and the south-west counties of England. To protect flocks and herds, officials recommend that farmers consult veterinarians regarding vaccination, maintain strict biosecurity, and promptly report any suspected cases to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).
