Wales education minister pledges action following poor PISA results

Welsh education officials and lawmakers are calling for urgent action following Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, which indicate that Welsh pupils are falling behind their peers in the UK and internationally in reading, mathematics, and science.

Education Minister Anna Brychan has pledged to drive up literacy and numeracy standards through a new strategy. This plan aims to establish clear expectations for action by uniting early years practitioners, teachers, and parents under a “vision for change.” Brychan intends to chair a new delivery board to oversee the implementation of this strategy, seeking measurable progress before the end of the current Senedd term.

Opposition members have characterized the findings as a “national emergency.” Reform MS David Mills noted that the decline is reflected in local areas like Powys, where Estyn has expressed “significant concern” regarding education services. Additionally, Mills criticized the UK Government’s introduction of VAT on independent school fees, suggesting it has contributed to the closure of seven independent schools in Wales and may widen educational inequalities.
