Wales environmental initiatives target water pollution and species protection

Several environmental initiatives are underway in Wales to address water quality and protect endangered species. The ‘Natur am Byth!’ project, a partnership between nine environmental charities and Natural Resources Wales, aims to protect endangered species and reconnect the public with natural heritage. This project includes a marine component led by the Marine Conservation Society, focusing on preserving species such as seagrass, the Pink Sea Fan, and the native oyster, while campaigning to improve water quality along the Welsh coast.

In a separate collaboration, Cardiff Metropolitan University has partnered with the charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) for a three-year project. This partnership seeks to tackle water pollution and improve the safety of bathing waters across Wales and the UK. By combining academic research with SAS’s monitoring and campaigning expertise, the initiative will focus on analyzing the public health impacts of sewage and pollution in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. The collaboration will utilize citizen science, new technologies, and data sharing to support policymakers and improve water quality standards.
