Wales expands creative economy through media innovation and culture bids
Wales is experiencing growth in its creative and cultural sectors, highlighted by recent industry showcases and regional development bids. In Cardiff, the PLAYBACK festival demonstrated the expansion of the Welsh media innovation ecosystem. Media Cymru, a consortium established to transform Wales into a global media hub, reported five years of progress, including backing 180 research and development projects and supporting the creation of 300 additional jobs.
Alison Lomax, Managing Director of YouTube UK & Ireland, noted the significant potential for Welsh content to reach global audiences, observing that over 80% of UK-created content is consumed overseas. She emphasized the opportunity to merge traditional broadcasting expertise with agile, digital-first storytelling.
Simultaneously, Wrexham is campaigning for the UK City of Culture 2029 title. During a meeting with Welsh politicians and cultural leaders in Cardiff, the Wrecsam 2029 team argued that a successful bid would provide economic and cultural benefits across the entire country. Wrexham is currently among nine long-listed locations, with a shortlist of four expected this autumn.
