Wales expands defence industry through £50 million growth deal

The Welsh government and the UK government have implemented the Wales Defence Growth Deal, a £50 million initiative designed to expand the Welsh arms industry. The deal aims to integrate more businesses and universities into military supply chains, increase military testing, and establish Wales as a launchpad for autonomous weapons systems.

To support this expansion, the Wales Defence & Security Cluster was established, chaired by Thales and Airbus Defence. This network connects the government, military, and approximately 160 businesses. A flagship event, the Defence Resilience Security Cymru summit, was organized to bring together buyers, suppliers, and innovators to capitalize on increased UK military spending.

In a related regional effort, the Focus Forum Glasgow aims to address challenges regarding resilience and critical national infrastructure. Led by Malcolm Warr OBE, the forum seeks to combine operational experience with fresh perspectives from a new generation of professionals to strengthen national and societal security.
