Wales First Minister pledges climate resilience plan after wildfires

Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has called for increased climate resilience following summer wildfires, describing the events as a warning that must not be ignored. Addressing the Senedd, ap Iorwerth pledged a cross-government approach to climate resilience, which will include the creation of Wales’ first climate and nature action plan.

To address the lessons learned from the fires, the First Minister announced he will convene a summit next month. He emphasized that while not every extreme weather event can be prevented, the government must focus on reducing risks and improving response capabilities through strengthened infrastructure and public services.

However, Reform UK’s shadow minister for rural affairs, Laura Anne Jones, criticized the government’s response as a “complete letdown.” Jones accused the administration of a lack of action and criticized the exclusion of farmers from the upcoming summit, noting that many in the agricultural sector have experienced “radio silence” from the government.
