Wales health officials urge RSV and flu vaccinations ahead of winter

The Welsh Government is urging eligible residents to receive the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine ahead of the winter season. Officials emphasized that flu vaccinations do not provide protection against RSV, which can cause serious conditions such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

In Wales, RSV is responsible for approximately 1,000 hospital admissions and 9,000 GP appointments among those aged 75 and older annually. The vaccine is available to adults aged 75 and over, pregnant women, and higher-risk adults aged 65 to 74 with chronic respiratory diseases or immunosuppression.

Separately, Public Health Wales reported that routine flu vaccinations are estimated to have prevented more than 800 hospital admissions in Wales last winter. Health officials are encouraging eligible groups—including older adults, pregnant women, and those with long-term health conditions—to utilize the free NHS flu vaccine to mitigate the risk of serious complications.
