Wales initiates Higher Education Review amid focus on tertiary skills

The Welsh Government has formally launched its Higher Education Review, prompting the Learned Society of Wales to assemble an independent expert group to inform the process. Chaired by Professor Elizabeth Treasure, the group includes representatives from the higher education sector, local government, the NHS, and the technology industry to address acute challenges within the national research and education systems.

Simultaneously, Medr has released its first annual report, noting that over £1 billion has been invested in tertiary education and research, supporting more than 320,000 learners across Wales. The report emphasizes the growing necessity for lifelong learning and adult retraining to address economic pressures, demographic shifts, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the workforce. Future priorities will likely focus on ensuring education providers have the capacity to support both young learners and existing employees in developing new skills.
