Wales launches sheep genetics pilot for farmers
Welsh sheep farmers are being invited to participate in the ‘Floctest: EBVs in Action’ pilot project, an initiative designed to improve flock performance through advanced genetics. Funded by the Welsh Government and delivered by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), the project aims to compare the impact of using high genetic merit, performance-recorded rams against existing stock rams in hill and maternal sheep flocks.
The study utilizes DNA technology to conduct a “blind test,” comparing lambs sired by performance-recorded rams with those from current stock. To maintain standard management practices, the project avoids the need for single-sire mating groups. Participating flocks will have up to 400 ewes, retained stock rams, and all resulting lambs DNA tested. Key metrics being tracked include breeding efficiency, scanning and lambing rates, lamb growth rates, and carcass characteristics such as conformation, fat class, and deadweight.
Farmers participating in the pilot can receive a subsidy of up to £1,000 per ram for a minimum of two and a maximum of four qualifying performance-recorded rams. Additionally, participants will receive practical support with data collection and interpretation from HCC and partners Innovis and Signet, as well as assistance in developing a bespoke Breeding Action Plan to help drive flock profitability.
