Wales proposes new publicly-owned national energy company

The Welsh Government has launched a consultation on proposals to establish a new, publicly-owned national energy company. The initiative aims to consolidate existing public energy organisations to increase Welsh ownership of renewable energy resources and ensure a greater share of economic benefits remains within the country.

Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy Adam Price stated that the goal is to create a stronger energy sector where revenues are reinvested into local communities and public services. While ministers suggest this could eventually lead to lower energy bills, the proposed company would not replace current energy suppliers or directly control the prices households pay for gas and electricity.

The plan comes amid ongoing debates regarding energy infrastructure. For instance, Green GEN Cymru is investing nearly £1bn in projects that involve new pylons through the Towy Valley, a move that has faced opposition from campaigners concerned about the impact on farmland and historic sites. The new public company is viewed as a response to local concerns that foreign companies are profiting from Welsh natural resources.
