Wales public bodies urged to act on £8.7m fraud risk

Welsh public bodies are being urged to accelerate fraud prevention efforts following a National Fraud Initiative (NFI) exercise that identified £8.7 million in fraud, overpayments, and errors. This figure represents a £1.6 million increase from the previous exercise and is the highest recorded in the last five cycles.

While engagement with fraud detection has improved, Audit Wales noted that delays in investigating irregularities and weaknesses in recording outcomes continue to pose risks to public finances. The identified losses primarily involve council tax single person discounts, blue badges, and housing waiting lists. Since the NFI began in 1996, Welsh public bodies have reported cumulative outcomes totaling £65.2 million. Audit Wales emphasized that a data match does not confirm wrongdoing and requires further investigation to prevent continued financial losses.
