Wales residents protest proposed Menai Strait data centre
Hundreds of residents gathered in Caernarfon, Wales, to protest proposed plans for a new data centre on a 40-hectare (101-acre) site between Caernarfon and Y Felinheli. Opponents expressed concerns regarding the project's impact on the natural landscape and the environmental integrity of the Menai Strait, a scenic area. A petition opposing the development has reportedly gathered over 15,000 to 22,500 signatures.
Developers, Canolfan Ddata Menai, argue the project will revitalize a long-derelict site and provide economic benefits, including over 900 jobs during construction and 200 permanent positions. The company maintains that the facility will have “no undue impact” on the Menai Strait or nearby protected sites and will preserve public access to local cycleways and footpaths.
Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts attended the rally, stating that while data centres are necessary in a digital age, they must be built with appropriate technology and in suitable locations to ensure local communities benefit rather than being exploited by extractive industries.
