Wales road fatalities rise amid speeding and distraction concerns

Recent data highlights growing concerns regarding road safety and driving behavior in Wales. A survey by OOONO of 1,500 people reveals that 57% of Welsh drivers admit to speeding, with 64% stating they do so habitually. The survey also found significant levels of driver distraction: 39% admitted to driving while tired, 31% used mobile phones, and 45% were distracted by passengers or children.

Concurrently, Department for Transport figures show that road deaths in Wales increased by 9% last year, with 91 fatalities recorded. The number of people killed or seriously injured in 2025 reached 1,361, the highest level since 2019.

These statistics have intensified political debate surrounding the 20mph speed limit policy introduced by the previous Labour administration. While former transport officials defended the policy as a successful safety intervention, opposition leaders have criticized the blanket zones, arguing they are ineffective and unpopular. In response to public pressure and a petition with nearly half a million signatures, recent policy shifts have allowed councils more power to raise certain limits to 30mph.
