Wales school holiday food programme reaches one million milestone

The Bwyd a Hwyl Food and Fun programme has reached a milestone of one million places provided over its 11 years of operation. The initiative, which provides free meals and activities to children during school holidays, is currently operating in 384 schools across all 22 Welsh local authorities.

Supported by £5.85 million in Welsh Government funding and coordinated by the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA), the scheme offers more than 16,000 places daily. The programme aims to promote healthy living, enhance learner wellbeing, and support families with food costs during the summer break. Activities are delivered in both English and Welsh.

Minister for Education and the Welsh Language, Anna Brychan, visited Blenheim Road Primary School to mark the achievement. This year’s theme, ‘Legends’ (Chwedlau), involves learners participating in creative activities based on local and national myths and historical figures.
