Wales seeks public input on new culture and sport strategy
The Welsh Government is seeking public input to shape a new strategy for culture and sport, with a consultation deadline set for December 18. Culture and Sport Minister Heledd Fychan has urged individuals, community groups, and organizations to participate, stating that these sectors are of fundamental importance to the nation and can contribute to a preventative health agenda.
An audit of community and regional sports facilities is currently underway to guide future capital spending. During discussions in the Senedd, officials addressed concerns regarding accessibility. Minister Fychan noted that removing barriers to participation is central to the government’s child poverty strategy, highlighting investments through Sport Wales to support affordable local opportunities.
However, lawmakers have raised concerns that rising costs for hall and court hires, along with reduced facility hours, are pricing out grassroots clubs and low-income families. Issues such as limited transportation access and the inability of some clubs to afford minibuses were also identified as significant barriers to participation for children in deprived areas.
