Wales to host UK's largest biogas plant in Deeside

A major new biogas plant is being constructed in Deeside, Wales, near the English border. Following permission from the Flintshire County Council, the £282 million investment is set to become the largest facility of its kind in the United Kingdom and one of the largest in Europe.

The plant will utilize anaerobic digestion technology developed by the German company BioConstruct GmbH to convert landfill waste into green energy. This energy will supply local manufacturing facilities, including Toyota. The process is expected to recover between 70% and 90% of waste, significantly reducing landfill volumes and increasing recycling rates to approximately 85%.

In addition to producing biomethane, the facility will feature an installation to capture and liquefy carbon dioxide. The plant is projected to produce roughly 41,182 cubic meters of biogas and 16,000 tons of CO2 annually. The captured CO2 will be stored and transported off-site in 24-ton containers, with a planned capacity of up to three containers per day, for use in industries such as refrigeration.
