Wales urges families to claim School Essentials Grant for school costs

The Welsh Government is urging low-income families to apply for the School Essentials Grant to assist with back-to-school expenses. The grant provides financial support for children from reception to Year 11.

Eligible families can receive £125 per child, with the amount increasing to £200 for pupils entering Year 7 to cover the higher costs associated with starting secondary school. The funds can be used for school uniforms, footwear, coats, classroom supplies such as pens and bags, and sports kits. Additionally, the grant covers musical instruments, specialist equipment for subjects like design and technology, and clothing for outdoor learning or school trips.

In limited circumstances where a school cannot loan necessary technology, the grant may also be used for laptops or tablets. Minister for Education and the Welsh Language Anna Brychan encouraged families to check their eligibility during August as they prepare for the new school year. Successful applications also contribute to the Pupil Development Grant provided to schools. Applications must be submitted to the local authority where the child attends school.
