Walfredo Gurgel Hospital faces critical medical supply shortages

Hospital Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel in Natal is facing a significant shortage of medical supplies and medications. An internal report from the hospital’s Pharmacy Division indicates that 25% of catalog items are completely out of stock, with an additional 11% at critical levels, meaning they have less than one month of supply remaining.

The shortage affects 189 items, including antibiotics, pain medication, gloves, and syringes. Following the report, the Regional Pharmacy Council of Rio Grande do Norte (CRF-RN) conducted an inspection. While the council confirmed the difficulties in the public procurement process, they stated that the current shortages have not yet directly compromised urgent and emergency care services.

The State Health Secretariat (Sesap) has acknowledged the situation, noting that previous shortages have reached levels as high as 36%. State officials are currently attempting to replenish stocks through supplier negotiations, new bidding processes, and product exchanges.
