WALHI criticizes Indonesia's energy transition and growth targets

Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (WALHI) has criticized the Indonesian government's economic growth targets, arguing that the pursuit of 8% growth threatens essential ecosystems and public safety.

During a thematic discussion at the University of Riau, WALHI representatives stated that current energy transition narratives often prioritize market expectations over ecological justice. They argued that success should be measured by the protection of community-managed territories and ecological stability rather than the total megawatts produced by corporations.

The organization warned that current energy transition projects risk marginalizing indigenous rights and causing new ecological crises, including water shortages and industrial pollution.
