Walid Jumblatt calls for Lebanese internal dialogue and arms monopoly
Former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt has called for an essential internal dialogue in Lebanon based on the principle that the state must hold the exclusive right to possess weapons. He suggested that the only way to achieve the disarmament of Hezbollah is through dialogue and a potential settlement supported by both Iran and Israel.
Jumblatt expressed concern regarding the regional vacuum created by the perceived withdrawal of the United States, noting that Israel is filling this void by expanding its influence and territory. He criticized current Lebanese-Israeli negotiations, stating they are unlikely to yield results as long as Israel continues its occupation of the south.
Regarding the domestic situation, Jumblatt warned against extreme stances on Hezbollah that could lead to civil war, emphasizing that the Shiite community is an integral part of Lebanon. He also rejected the creation of cantons, advocating for coexistence between Christians and Muslims.
