Walker Kessler aims to anchor Los Angeles Lakers defense
Walker Kessler, the Los Angeles Lakers' major new acquisition, is expressing high confidence in the team's defensive capabilities for the upcoming NBA season. Despite skepticism regarding the Lakers' defensive identity, Kessler believes the roster possesses the necessary tools, citing perimeter defenders and the positional intelligence of teammates like Kevon Looney.
Kessler, who joined the Lakers in a sign-and-trade deal worth approximately $130 million over four years, is expected to serve as the team's defensive anchor in the paint. This follows a season where he missed 77 games due to a left shoulder labrum tear. Lakers executive Rob Pelinka addressed medical concerns, stating that specialists viewed the injury as a “unique repair” rather than a persistent issue, and confirmed Kessler is fully cleared to play.
Kessler, who will play alongside stars Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, noted that he views the pressure of playing for a historic franchise as an opportunity rather than a burden. He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and staying grounded regardless of public perception.
