Walking benefits and limitations for gout patients
Walking can support overall health for individuals with gout, but it does not directly eliminate uric acid or dissolve urate crystals from joints. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Lien from Viet Duc University Hospital, the primary benefits of moderate walking include weight management, improved metabolism, and enhanced cardiovascular health.
For overweight patients, gradual weight loss may help lower uric acid levels and reduce the risk of gout flares. However, rapid weight loss or extreme fasting should be avoided, as sudden dietary changes can actually increase uric acid concentrations and trigger acute attacks.
Patients are advised to avoid walking or intense exercise during an acute gout flare, characterized by swelling, heat, redness, and intense pain in joints such as the big toe, ankle, or knee. Applying pressure to inflamed joints during these episodes can worsen pain and damage rather than aiding in uric acid excretion.
