Walking benefits for cardiovascular health and cancer prevention
Regular walking offers significant physical and mental health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, weight management, increased bone density, and reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.
For elderly individuals, routine walking can improve blood circulation and help prevent vascular blockages, which often manifest as cold extremities, skin color changes, numbness, or swelling in the ankles and feet. It also assists in weight control.
Regarding cancer prevention, research indicates that walking can lower the risk of various cancers by reducing systemic inflammation, improving insulin sensitivity, and supporting the immune system. While a common belief suggests 10,000 steps are necessary, oncology specialist dr Vartika Vishwani notes that benefits appear at lower thresholds. Citing a 2025 study of 85,000 participants in the UK, data shows that walking 7,000 steps per day can reduce cancer risk by 11 percent compared to 5,000 steps, while 9,000 steps can reduce risk by 16 percent.
