Walking benefits for weight loss and health
Walking serves as an effective and accessible tool for weight loss when integrated consistently into a daily routine and combined with a balanced diet. While high-intensity workouts are often prioritized, low-intensity walking utilizes a higher percentage of fat as fuel during the activity, though total fat loss ultimately depends on overall energy expenditure and nutrition.
Research indicates that the popular goal of 10,000 steps is not a mandatory threshold for health benefits. A 2025 review suggests that approximately 7,000 steps per day are already linked to significant health advantages. Furthermore, a review of 116 studies found that aerobic exercises, including walking, cycling, and running, are associated with reductions in body weight, waist circumference, and body fat percentage, with the most substantial changes occurring at around 150 minutes of moderate to intense activity per week.
Factors such as body weight, walking speed, duration, and incline influence calorie burning. Walking offers a sustainable advantage because it is easier to maintain as a long-term habit and typically does not trigger the intense hunger often following high-intensity training. Increasing daily movement through small changes, such as taking the stairs or walking short distances, can help create the energy deficit necessary for weight loss.
