Walking groups promote active lifestyles in Ieper and Torhout
Community walking initiatives are active across various regions in Belgium, focusing on social engagement and physical activity for seniors and local residents.
In Ieper, monthly walking excursions are organized on the fourth Friday afternoon of each month. Upcoming routes include the Geuzen route in Nieuwkerke on September 25, a legacy walk in Zonnebeke on October 23, a trip to Scherpenberg in Loker on November 27, and a walk around Kemmelberg in December. Organizers are currently seeking volunteers to help prepare routes or lead groups.
In Torhout, a long-standing tradition of Monday walking groups for those over 50 has continued for nearly forty years. These sessions involve approximately 10-kilometer walks led by a team of volunteers. The program, which has roots in early initiatives by Sport Vlaanderen (formerly BLOSO), aims to keep seniors active and socially connected through regular outdoor exercise.
