Walking linked to improved cognitive health in new study
A study published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests that walking may provide significant benefits for cognitive health. Researchers tracked 3,093 adults, aged 18 to 93, as part of a US research program between 2009 and 2023.
Using specialized devices to record physical activity and electronic medical records to monitor blood pressure, the study found that individuals who took more daily steps performed better on tests evaluating attention, concentration, self-control, and decision-making. Specifically, every additional 1,000 steps per day was associated with higher scores in these cognitive tasks.
The study categorized participants into three groups based on average daily steps: approximately 5,100, 8,900, and 14,200. The two groups with higher levels of physical activity demonstrated significantly better cognitive performance compared to the group with lower step counts.
