Walking patterns may reveal signs of anxiety and depression

Researchers investigating the relationship between mental health and motor patterns have found that walking patterns may serve as indicators of anxiety and depression. A study published in Scientific Reports examined middle-aged adults in the United States to determine how symptoms manifest in everyday movement outside of a laboratory setting.

The research suggests that subtle changes in cadence, step acceleration, and daily movement patterns can reflect mental health status. While previous studies have linked depression to slower gait speeds and anxiety to increased postural sway, this study aimed to assess the ecological validity of these movement-based biomarkers in real-world scenarios.
