Wall-sits identified as effective bodyweight exercise for strength
Per Aagaard, a professor of muscle physiology and biomechanics at the University of Southern Denmark, identifies the wall-sit as the primary exception to the rule that bodyweight training is primarily for endurance.
While traditional bodyweight exercises like push-ups, planks, and lunges typically focus on endurance, Aagaard notes that building significant strength and muscle mass generally requires heavy loads from weights or machines. However, the wall-sit—where the individual holds a 90-degree seated position against a wall for as long as possible—can effectively challenge muscles by inducing rapid lactic acid buildup and activating numerous muscle fibers, especially when performed in 2–3 sets.
Despite the effectiveness of the wall-sit, Aagaard emphasizes that heavy strength training remains the most efficient method for those seeking substantial increases in strength.
