Wall Street profits surge to $45.9 billion in first half of 2026

Wall Street's securities industry experienced a massive surge in the first half of 2026, with pre-tax profits reaching $45.9 billion. This represents a 51.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025. According to a report by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, the industry is currently on track to potentially exceed $90 billion in annual profits, which would surpass the previous record of $65.1 billion set in 2025.

Key drivers for this growth include significant spending on artificial intelligence, increased merger and acquisition activity, and elevated trading volumes fueled by market volatility. The industry also saw record employment levels, with over 207,000 workers. Consequently, the bonus pool is expected to rise, contrasting with earlier city projections of a decline.

Beyond corporate profits, the industry remains a vital economic pillar for New York City. In fiscal year 2026, the securities industry contributed at least $7.8 billion to the city's budget, a 15.8% increase from the previous year. However, risks persist, including geopolitical tensions and rising interest rates; the 10-year Treasury yield recently hit 5.35%, its highest level since 2002, which could impact future dealmaking and profitability.
