Wallaby spotted in Liskeard, Cornwall

A wallaby has been spotted hopping through the streets of Liskeard, Cornwall, causing significant local interest. Witnesses reported seeing the marsupial early Monday morning, with one local business owner initially mistaking the animal for a large dog in the dark.

Devon and Cornwall Police were alerted to the sighting on Dean Street, but a subsequent search of the area did not locate the animal. The RSPCA has advised the public to observe the creature from a distance and not to attempt to approach it. The organization noted that while wallabies are not native to the UK, they are considered established in the wild after escaping from captivity or private collections.

Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary issued a statement clarifying that the wallaby is not an escapee from their facility. The sanctuary has urged residents not to attempt to catch or corner the animal, warning that such actions could cause the wallaby significant stress or lead it to bolt into dangerous areas like roads or fences.
