Wallaroos face transition and contract uncertainty ahead of WXV

The Australian women’s national rugby team, the Wallaroos, are entering a period of significant transition as they prepare for the WXV Global Series. The upcoming season marks the final period in which the squad will operate as semi-professionals; starting in November, players will join the Sevens program in a full-time high-performance environment.

Under the leadership of new women’s high-performance manager Tim Walsh, the team is working to align the Sevens and XVs programs. While the coaching staff is undergoing changes—including the upcoming arrival of Sione Fukofuka as head coach in 2027—the current squad faces immediate pressure. Many players are currently on short-term contracts that expire at the end of 2026, creating a sense of uncertainty regarding their professional futures.

Backrower Emily Chancellor noted that the team is focused on performing well to secure future selection, describing the current atmosphere as one where players are striving to put themselves in the best position to move forward. The team is looking to rebound from a recent heavy loss to New Zealand as they head into fixtures against England and other international opponents.
