Wallersheim church fire investigation resolved as accident

An investigation into a suspected case of arson at a church in Wallersheim, Germany, has been resolved as an accident. Initially, the Prüm Police launched an investigation into aggravated arson after a fire was reported in a storage room on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

The fire was discovered around 7:00 PM by the church caretaker, who managed to extinguish the flames before they could spread, limiting the property damage to the storage room and door cladding.

However, the case was quickly clarified when the caretaker reported that the fire was accidental. While using a blowtorch to clear weeds around the church, he inadvertently came too close to the building wall, igniting chipboard material. The situation was subsequently reported to the sexton, leading to a misunderstanding that prompted the initial police investigation.
