Climate extremes trigger wildfires and water shortages globally
Multiple regions are facing severe environmental challenges driven by climate-related extremes. In Belgium, firefighters have successfully encircled a massive wildfire in the High Fens nature reserve that has destroyed 3,000 hectares. While the fire is contained and not moving toward Germany, officials warn that total extinction could take weeks due to deep-seated burning in peatlands.
Simultaneously, water scarcity is a growing concern. Brussels has maintained a yellow drought alert level, urging citizens to limit non-essential water use. In Wallonia, the government blocked Google's proposal to use river water for cooling a new data center to protect limited resources during a period of acute drought.
In Suriname, the Fire Brigade has increased its readiness and deployed specialized units to combat the heightened risk of grass and trash fires during an expected period of extreme drought. Meanwhile, Indonesia is grappling with significant weather extremes, including 154,000 fire hotspots and the emergence of a submerged village in a dried-out reservoir.
