Walmart announces major investments in energy storage and supply chain automation
Walmart is launching two significant strategic initiatives focused on energy resilience and logistics efficiency. The retailer has committed to a partnership with Texas-based startup Base Power to promote home battery storage systems. Starting in November 2026, Walmart and Sam’s Club customers who enroll in eligible Base Power programs at participating stores will receive a 20% discount on installation fees. The rollout will begin in Texas before expanding nationwide, aiming to provide households with affordable power and blackout protection while helping to stabilize local grids during peak demand.
In a separate move to enhance its logistics, Walmart will invest approximately $6 billion over the next several years to expand automated technologies. Working with technology partner Symbotic, the retailer plans to implement automation across 25 U.S. distribution centers. This investment is intended to support e-commerce inventory management, increase storage capacity, and improve product movement speed. The initiative aims to bolster Walmart’s ability to compete in the e-commerce sector by improving replenishment reliability and inventory accuracy.
