Walmart criticized over digital price tags while pledging tariff‑refund price cuts

Walmart is expanding electronic shelf labels that enable on‑the‑spot price changes for thousands of items. Consumer advocates warn that dynamic pricing could lead to sudden price spikes and erode shopper trust, and some U.S. cities such as New York have taken steps to limit or ban the technology. A petition to CEO John Furner urges the retailer to reconsider the rollout.

In a separate move, Walmart announced it will pass a portion of recent government tariff refunds to customers through lower prices. Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said, “We think that the single best return that we can have on a dollar of capital right now is to invest in the customer, invest in price.” CEO John Furner added that the retailer remains focused on helping shoppers facing financial pressure, noting the company’s ongoing price‑cut initiatives across thousands of products.
