Walmart denies Trump pressured company to cut prices
President Donald Trump claimed he urged Walmart to lower prices in celebration of the United States' 250th anniversary, citing a near‑15% cut to a pound of ground beef and other items. Walmart said the discounts were part of its regular "rollback" promotions and that the sale began a week before Trump's statement.
The retailer noted that a USDA official had spoken with Walmart, Kroger and Albertsons before the July 4th holiday about beef pricing, and Walmart had already planned summer price reductions. The company rejected the notion that it acted at Trump's request, adding that the claim fits a pattern of the former president taking credit for economic actions he did not influence.
