Walmart expands delivery and automation through Walmart+ and Symbotic
Walmart is driving growth through its Walmart+ membership program and enhanced delivery capabilities. During a Q2 2027 earnings call, EVP and CFO John David Rainey reported that Walmart+ membership grew in the double digits, marking the strongest first-half growth in the program's history. Walmart+ members reportedly spend approximately four times more than non-members.
To support this growth, the retailer is focusing on speed and convenience. Fast delivery in the U.S. grew 48% for the quarter, with 38 markets now offering delivery in 30 minutes or less. E-commerce currently accounts for more than 23% of Walmart's U.S. sales mix.
As part of its technological expansion, Walmart has begun installing Symbotic's SymMicro system for e-commerce fulfillment in the back of a Walmart store. This automation technology is intended to accelerate in-store pickup and delivery operations. Symbotic CEO Richard Cohen stated the system is expected to be operational within approximately six months, with additional sites to follow. This initiative is part of a broader partnership where Walmart has made a contingent promise to purchase 400 automated systems to strengthen its supply chain and limit costs.
