Walmart expands frozen berry recall due to E. coli concerns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded a recall of frozen berries to include Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend sold at Walmart stores. The expansion follows traceback information linking the product to the same Chilean supplier, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., involved in a previous recall.

The recalled product consists of 10-ounce bags of frozen strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries with UPC 7874211226 and lot code 6040 01-6. The best-if-used-by date is February 9, 2028. The blend was distributed to Walmart locations across 16 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin.

The recall is due to potential contamination with E. coli O145:H28, a Shiga toxin-producing strain. While no illnesses have been specifically tied to this Walmart product, the company described the measure as precautionary. Symptoms of infection can include stomach cramps, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea, with some cases leading to serious complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
