Walmart faces class-action lawsuit over shrimp weight allegations

Walmart is facing a class-action lawsuit in Cook County, Illinois, alleging that its Great Value brand frozen shrimp packages contain significantly less product than advertised. The lawsuit, filed by Elijah Baptist, claims that the company is deceiving customers by using excessive ice glazing to artificially inflate the weight of the seafood.

According to the complaint, some packages contained up to 11 percent less shrimp than the advertised net weight once the ice was removed. While glazing is a standard industry practice used to prevent freezer burn, the suit argues that the amount used in Great Value products violates U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines, which state that the weight of the glaze should not be included in the net weight of the product.

A Walmart spokesperson stated that the company has policies to ensure suppliers provide correctly labeled products and noted that they are reviewing the complaint to respond in court.
