Walmart introduces new membership program and expands debt market access

Walmart is launching a new membership program aimed at securing customer loyalty through upfront annual fees. Analysts have expressed skepticism regarding the program's value proposition, noting that consumers are already managing multiple subscriptions such as streaming services and warehouse club memberships. Critics suggest that if the benefits are too complex to calculate, the model may shift from providing convenience to becoming a burden of “bundle management” for households.

In a separate strategic move, Walmart is seeking to diversify its financing by entering the Canadian debt market. The company plans to conduct two US-dollar bond sales this year to fund an increasing pipeline of capital expenditures (Capex). By expanding its reach to Canadian investors, management aims to reduce reliance on a single investor group and improve pricing through increased competition in the credit markets.
