Walmart Mexico to Start 40‑Hour Work Week in 2027

Walmart de México y Centroamérica announced that it will begin reducing its weekly work schedule from 48 to 40 hours starting in January 2027. The company plans a gradual cut of two hours per year, reaching the 40‑hour week by 2030, after testing operational models to keep customer service levels unchanged. In its 2026 second‑quarter report, Walmart also lowered its full‑year sales growth outlook to 3.5‑4.5% in constant currency and expects a slightly lower EBITDA margin.

The move follows a nationwide labor reform that mandates a shorter workweek and is accompanied by heightened government workplace inspections. New obligations require employers to prevent gender‑based discrimination, violence against women, psychosocial risks and forced labor, with penalties for non‑compliance. An EY survey shows 72 % of Mexican firms have not yet begun preparing for the transition, making Walmart one of the first major retailers to implement the schedule.

The reform aims to improve work‑life balance while preserving employment and productivity across Mexico.
