Walmart México prepares for Mexico's labor hour reduction

Walmart de México y Centroamérica (Walmex) is preparing for the gradual implementation of Mexico’s new labor reform, which mandates a reduction in the maximum weekly working hours from 48 to 40. The transition is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2027, starting with an initial reduction of two hours per week, bringing the total to 46 hours.

To maintain productivity and service standards, the retailer is focusing on automation and digital tools. This includes the use of digital price tags at Walmart Express to speed up updates and a new inventory management system capable of coordinating over five million replenishment tasks weekly. The company has already conducted pilot programs in approximately 100 stores to test 40-hour work weeks and optimize shifts.

The broader constitutional reform in Mexico aims to complete the transition to a 40-hour work week by 2030, ensuring that employees do not face reductions in wages or benefits.
