Walmart CEO pledges no personalized pricing amid digital label rollout

Walmart CEO John Furner has issued a formal pledge to customers and employees stating that the company will not use personal data, shopping history, or artificial intelligence to implement personalized or dynamic pricing. This commitment comes amid growing scrutiny from consumers, lawmakers, and regulators regarding the retailer's rollout of digital shelf labels and its AI-powered shopping assistant, Sparky.

Walmart is currently expanding its use of digital price tags, which allow for centralized price updates and ensure shelf prices match checkout totals. While the technology is intended to improve accuracy and reduce manual labor for associates, it has sparked fears that the company could charge different prices based on a customer's income, perceived urgency, or time of day. Furner emphasized that the company follows an ‘Every Day Low Price’ model and will ‘price the product, not the person.’

Despite these assurances, consumer advocacy groups like the Groundwork Collaborative have pointed to existing patents that could allow for dynamic pricing based on supply, demand, or items already in a customer's cart. The retailer expects to have digital shelf labels in all U.S. stores by the end of 2026, with approximately 2,300 locations already utilizing the technology.
