Walmart Pushes AI Training While Experts Stress Human Skills Remain Essential
Workplace experts say the skills most resistant to AI are those that are distinctly human—empathy, relationship‑building, conflict resolution and ethical judgment. Maria Flynn, CEO of Jobs for the Future, describes these as “durable skills” that retain value across economic shifts and technological change. Harvard Business School professor Marco Iansiti adds that nurses’ compassionate care and salespeople’s trusted client relationships illustrate capabilities AI cannot yet replicate, even as AI handles routine tasks.
Walmart, employing 2.1 million workers in the United States and Canada, announced a company‑wide AI rollout that includes free certification for all staff. At its Associates Week in Arkansas, chief people officer Donna Morris said the retailer will use AI for functions such as clothing design and truck coordination, but the focus is on improving, not replacing, jobs. The eight‑hour training, built with Google, aims to equip associates with AI fundamentals so they can leverage the technology to enhance performance and advance to higher‑pay roles.
