Walmart stock falls as U.S. comparable sales growth slows to six-year low
Walmart reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of $187.9 billion, a 5.9% year-over-year increase, and adjusted earnings per share of 81 cents, both exceeding analyst expectations. Despite these strong headline figures, the company's stock experienced a significant decline, losing over $80 billion in market capitalization in a single day.
The primary driver for the market's negative reaction was a slowdown in U.S. comparable sales, which grew by 2.6%. This represents the company's slowest comparable sales growth in six years and fell short of the 3.7% to 3.8% consensus estimates. Analysts noted that pharmacy sales were negatively impacted by new price regulations, and higher fuel prices are contributing to more cautious consumer spending.
To counter these pressures, Walmart is leveraging approximately $2.9 billion in tariff refunds to implement price reductions on roughly 11,000 products, primarily in groceries and general merchandise. The company also reported strong momentum in digital channels, with U.S. e-commerce sales rising 24% and global e-commerce sales increasing 23%. Sam’s Club also saw growth, with comparable sales excluding fuel rising 4.4% and e-commerce sales increasing 26%.
Looking ahead, Walmart raised its full-year guidance for net sales growth to a range of 4.0% to 5.0% and revised its adjusted earnings per share guidance to a range of $2.80 to $2.87.
